Turn off undo to speed things up?

Post by RossThompson87 »

Hi,

I am working on a very large project with complicated geometry. If I draw a simple square window it takes 10 seconds + of computing time to complete the operation. My PC is pretty high spec.

I have a limited knowledge of programming from uni, but is IES trying to save a file that represents the entire model for the undo feature to work?

I don't understand what the software would be doing during that time.

If it is the undo feature could there be a hidden option to disable it for experienced users? id rather take my chances making a mistake than have to wait.

Yes – the undo operation is a silent save. It’s something that we have identified as an area for improvement. We could probably put in a Key-in to disable the Undo operation. There are other performance issues we will be addressing for October. For the moment you could use the MB=OFF key-in to disable the browser update while you are drawing with ModelIT tools. I would suggest switching the browser on again with MB=ON before moving on to other tasks.

Hi, did this feature ever get added? If so how do we turn off the undo function?
Also, what does the MB=OFF command actually do - what do you mean by browser update? is this just the visual display refreshing? This command is not listed when pressing escape in the command box nor is it listed in this document:
http://www.iesve.com/downloads/help/Mod ... KeyIns.pdf
are there also other commands that aren't listed that we should know about?

Hi,

The feature will be in VE2014-FP1 as I think I mentioned but perhaps didn't make clear enough. Since that has neither been built or distributed then you won't be able to use it yet. July 1 is the scheduled release date.

MB=OFF switches off the update of the model browser (the wee list of all the rooms in the model to the left of the screen). It helps out because that gets repopulated each edit... which is another thing that I'll start to look at once I get past the current deadline.

Yes there are other key-in commands and I or one of my colleagues will look to document these newer entries shortly.

David.

Just an update on VE 2014 FP1, this is still to be released, awaiting CLG to confirm approval for Part L2 but it is ready to go online as soon as it's signed off.
