Extension

Post by Chris A »

Hi,

Anyone got any thoughts on this scenario....

a 400m2 (single room) extension is being built, the whole room is kept at a temperature of 6deg.

I am trying to persuade BC that an SBEM is not required as it is kept at that temp due to process needs.

Other than the following paragraphs does anyone know of any official guidance to back my argument up? Or do you think I am wrong?

Part L2A 2013 app C paragraph 2 c (BC says its not industrial, workshop or agricultural. And says that it is not low energy as keeping a building at 6deg will use a lot of energy)
Part L2A 2013 app A - definition of fixed building services- part (b) - I am arguing that cooling for 6deg is not 'air conditioning'. Therefore there are no services. But they are not keen on that either.

Hi Chris,

The only documentation I can think of is Part L. So you are looking in the right place.

I guess its up for interpretation but in my opinion at least the cooling energy should be exempt as its for a process.

There is also the building regulations document which I understand sits on top of part L:

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2010 ... 214_en.pdf

You may find something in there, but the writing style is more for lawyers than engineers!

You've probably thought of this, and I'm not sure if it will make it any easier for you, but if it's an extension, might it be L2B rather than L2A? i.e. is it <25% of the GIFA of the existing building?

Thanks both. Yeah - Its a large extension so converts back to L2A.
