View Room Width and Depth?

Post by JohnLloyd »

Is there a way to get IES to output or tabulate the width and depth of a room?

There are various ways to view the area, volume, height, perimeter length etc. but I don't think I know of a way to get the width and depth of a room without manually measuring each on. Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Hi John

This only works if you are dealing with rectangular rooms but you can use the following equations where A = area, P = perimeter which I believe can be output from the tabular room data in ModelIT. The following are interchangeable by the way.

W = ((P/2)+SQRT((P^2/4)-4*A))/2
D = ((P/2)-SQRT((P^2/4)-4*A))/2

This is the result of solving simultaneously for
1) WD = A
2) 2W + 2D = P

I haven't tested it exhaustively so you might want to convince yourself that it works but my spot checks have been encouraging so far.

Thanks CP. Unfortunately the rooms are rarely perfectly rectangular in this building, but some good info anyway.

CP - I'm afraid I don't understand your post at all. Sounds like it could be revolutionary for me.

What are the 'showme tab things' and where might I find them?

They're not called Showme reports any longer, they were renamed a little while ago. You can get to them by going to the Tools menu and then Report Generator.

You can also see these items in tabular room data, if accessed from ModelIT. This is probably the simpler way to get the information in a format that can be easily copy and pasted into Excel.

Ah yes, they stopped being called "Showme" a while ago. Tabular room data, that's the ticket and what I was actually referring to. I shall edit the original reply to avoid confusing some other poor soul.

I don't know, kids these days and their crazy lingo....

Hi guys,

We do store the bounding width, depth and height information internally, however there is no way to get the information out of the software at present.

I'll add it to our feedback list for future consideration.

Good News!

The ability to view the bounding width, depth and height information in Tabular Room Data will be available in VE2015.

They won't be visible by default, so you'll have to go through Configure tabs and columns… or Manage Columns... to add/access them.

I hope this helps. :)
