Rhino to IES

Post by Rktct6782 »

The plug in is having trouble recognizing rooms in my model. The geometry is starting off as completely closed volumes and flat shading surfaces from Rhino that are exported to skp file, and then running the plug in from sketchup. But It is reading about half of the rooms as shading surfaces, even though they started as volumes.

Any recommendations?

Hi,

Each time a model is translated to a new package there can be a loss of quality along the way but in principal Rhine -> SketchUp -> IESVE is a good workflow and one that our own modelling team here use to get detailed curved designs into a format where they can be imported to ModelIT as valid segmented/tessellated shapes.

In particular for complex roof shapes the SketchUp plug-in can be very useful but it may not always work well in a single move. You may need to spend some time tidying up the model in SketchUp after import to improve the result you get. Try to isolate certain parts of the model so you can focus on them individually. If you use Groups/Components in SketchUp then you can easily set majority of model to ignore and work rapidly on one problematic area. What we would normally recommend is to do simple geometry modelling in ModelIT then export more complex parts from SketchUp and use the ModelIT GEM file format to bring it all together.

After identifying rooms if any were not picked up the right click menu gives you some very useful diagnostic tools
