Importing Revit Model Into VE 6.0, geometri question

IES's specially developed Revit plug-in Toolbar allows Revit Architecture and MEP users to import their 3D BIM model into IES's software and undertake sustainable performance analysis.

Importing Revit Model Into VE 6.0, geometri question

Post by alan85 »

Hello!

I want to import a revit model to the IES , but im having a problem. Ive send the model to IES support, and they couldnt help me.

"The problem is in Revit, although the model appears to be constructed properly to me Revit does not seem to be bounding the rooms with the roof. I have seen this in the past where the roof had custom properties that prevented it from being included in the gbXML bounding elements although you appear to have used a standard roof element for this. I would suggest you contact Autodesk support as they should be able to comment further"

I intend to change the roof geometry slightly, to see if it will work. I wanna perform an energy analysis for the model. And my questions are:

1) Will the geometry change, affect the "energy value" results in ApaceSim?
2) I know that it will have an affect in SunCast, for example were the shadings occur, but does it have more affects in SunCast?
3)And what kind of information will SunCast use in ApacheSim? Can the geometry change, have any affects?

Sincerely Alan

I've had similar problems now and again with Revit (and lesser issues with the excellent SketchUp) but I don't sweat it - Revit's export is cr*p in all honesty it's not the VE at fault most of the time as it looks like you've heard already.

I simply import the damned thing - delete the rubbish zones and re-draw them in ModelIT. You can't go back to Revit anyway so if you have to do the odd tidy then boo hoo.
I've got better things to do that try to apportion blame to IES or Autodesk - I can redraw most spaces in less time than it takes for my coffee to cool.

I remember talking to a bank programmer mate of mine a couple of years ago about how computers never seem to do what I want them to in my head and he told me a mantra that these guys seem to have:
> Sh*t In = Sh*t Out.
I think this applies in some small aspect to transferring models between different drafting packages.

If the source file has problems then the resultant import will have problems and they might well be magnified since the source might not care if a space is bound or not (to use this particular example).

OK for your questions:
1) Will changing the geometry change the energy results?
>> Probably. But if the changes are simply cosmetic or slightly changing the roof volume then not substantially.
2) Will Geometry changes have more affects than the shading areas?
>> No, SunCast is only there to generate shading areas. How these shading (or more accurately sunlit) areas affect the solar gain within the dynamic simulation is another matter.

Hi!

Thank you for your post. Im a student from sweden doing my examination paper and i would like to do an mail/forum interview, if you dont mind.

1) Who are you, and what is your occupation?

2) What is the IES (VE-Pro) verified by?

3) Can/Could the IES meet swedish standards ( BBR) ? If not, what does it take or what can you do, to meet the swedish regulations/standards using the IES?

Alan,

I think these are questions for IES rather than people like me.
It's their product - I'm just a cynical old user.

Hi Alan,

I'll send a you a private message and try to answer questions 2 and 3. If you are looking for some general info on our users you might want to post in the general conversation areas of the boards rather than the Revit plug-in section.
