Modelling rooms in a roof

Hello,

I am trying to create rooms within a roofspace, I have created a roof using the generate roof function. There are a number of spaces i need to inculde in this area, can I sub divide this area by adding partitions?

Hi Jonnymac,
You can partition your roof using 'Edit' tool or 'Partition' tool.

Procedure to use 'Partition' tool:
1) Select a roof & go to plan view.
2) Click 'Draw partition' button from the toolbar & create a partition.



Procedure to use 'Edit space' tool:
1) Select a roof & click 'Move down one level' button from the toolbar.
2) Select 'Edit' from 'display mode' drop-down. (This will pop-up 'Edit space' form.)
3) Using 'Edit space' you can partition your room.

It will be difficult for me to explain you the usage of 'Edit form' in detail . The better idea would be to go for a "IES Training" program.

Hi, having some problems still.

The roof is made up of a zone which is about 1.5m, then Ive drawing the roof on top, ive connected the spaces and then im trying to sub-divide them. Some of the partition walls end up only 1.5m high in the lower space and other end up in the up space. Not sure if Im tackling this the correct way.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Jonnymac,
You can use 'Edit space' tool if you want to separate the connected spaces.
Remember 'Edit space' is an advanced tool. You may find it difficult using it.
I will strongly recommend you to go for "IES Training" program & learn this & some other advanced tool.

I admit I need to cover this inthe training.

However wheather I seperate the spaces or connect them the internal partitions only generate in that partitualr zone, i.e i get a 1.5m high dwarf wall, or a wall from the top zone to the underside of the roof.

Hi,

just stepping in here as Vajindar is on his holidays at the moment (jealous, me?). I think with ModelIT the training is great (the modellers here know a lot of tricks and best practices) but you can learn a lot from experience and just doing things yourself.

It's hard to express in text but if I've understood what you are trying to do then it should simply be a case of draw the room, draw the roof on top. Connect these using Connect Spaces and choose remove partitions so there is a hole between them. Then you can select the single space you've created (room and roof space) and in plan view use the Draw Partitions tool to subdivide and this will give an option to Divide with Partitions.

I just tried this by drawing a rectangle with a pitched roof on top, connected them then partitioned the space and the internal walls/partitions were the full height from ground up to the upper part of the pitch. I think this is the effect you are going for?

I still can't get this to work!

I have followed you steps and tried this a few times now, soemtimes it works sometimes it doesn't?

When Dividing the space I have tried clicking on top of the wall below i.e the rectangular block I have connected to the roof, I have also tired clicking on to the edge of the roof at the eaves, but still get a mixture of dwarf walls and the opposite. No consistent result.

I have drawn one partition with sucess and then had to connect the spaces again, only to find the next partition doesn't draw properly.

When dividing the space I have "divde space with partitions" checked and "Generate new seperate zones" checked. is this correct?

Im not sure if this is a reason but I have a 1m overhang at the eaves, may be this is causing the problem?

ah I finally see this! When testing this I didn't have an overhang on my "roof" zone.

Looks like the partition tool is not aware of the spaces being connected at all, I'll raise with the ModelIT development team and see if we can improve this.

A solution that should work for you just now is to Merge the spaces rather than Connect them (the Merge option can be found on the Connect Spaces tool). From my simple tests it appears that partitioning the space after it has been merged results in full height partitions. Alternatively (and I'm sure you have tried) you can just partition the room and roof space separately and then connect them afterwards.

Hi Phil,

Did what advised , ie merging the zones instead it was working a treat up to a point then, it seems to take away parts of the roof.

Going to presevere and simplfy the zones as much as possible.
