windows in ies

Post by CKelly »

just curious does it really matter to get the windows bang on in measurements with ies to get the solar gains as in say it was either a .1m meter either side make a big difference in the over all solar gains ? as i was going to input them manually but my tutor ken beattie said a ratio % was just as good to get the solar gains, as i was messing around with it there and if i manual input it what is the average depth from the ground is a usually window ? as i seen when i do it the % way its it centres it equally just curious thanks

also one other point, with my project i was told it was 3.5 meters with 500 mm being that of ceiling void for services, and the windows have to be 2 meters in height, so with that it gives me a from floor to cil height of .8 and from ceiling to window is .7 does that make any difference to the cals ? or its it ok

in terms of solar gain I don't expect this to have too much impact (perhaps more important when considering the effect of shading from obstructions nearby depending on the model) but really the best way would be for you to build a few options and run some sims to see the effects. The <VE> is built to allow what if scenarios to be assessed and this would inform you for future projects.

Can't hurt to have a go and see for yourself?

hey Pcully

thanks for your input, but if could pick your brains again here, with solar shading for windows i was i have seen it done when on ies Ireland presentations with john glesson and wondering how it is done were, example the different types of shading for the window were the original one shown to use in uni by K.beattie is the slab like shading but i have seen other type of shading for windows in power points from Mr Glesson were it is done in a shutting like appearance that covers over the window i am just curious as to how that its done as i want to try and do it on sim to see the difference with them both as the irish sun is at different angles if u can help it would be great thanks

The two different options you have are

1. Model the shading device as part of the glazing construction in Constructions Database (you can choose Local/External/Internal)
2. Model the physical shading objects by drawing them in ModelIT when drawing these change the shape settings dialog Room Type option to one of Adjacent Building, Topographical Shade or Local Shade.

I would guess option 2 is what you have seen in John's presentations. You would need to run SunCast and choose the SunCast link in Apache simulation settings to get the full benefit here.
