Problems with network deployment of IES plugin for SU8

Post by octavalent »

Hi,
First thanks for developing the SU 8 plugin, we have used it with success in generating models for IES and are introducing the next generation of designers and engineers to your software. We are however experiencing Bug Splat's when we send Sketchup 8 with the installed IES plugin down the network for deployment to our PC labs here at Coventry Uni. Are there any know issues that you are aware of? The imaged version works in testing and on several stand alone pc's, but not on the recipeint machines after network deployment. There are only the standard Google plugins installed, nothing fancy.

Hi Paul,

I don't have much experience with this myself but will ask our installation support team if they have encountered anything like this before or can think of a solution.

I may send you a direct message if we require any further information but will try to remember to post any resolution back here for others.

Hi,

My colleague Trevor who deals with a lot of the IT/Installation support has given the following advice which seems sensible to me, this should be useful for any other IT depts who want to roll out a network install of our plug-ins - have to install locally (sorry).
The issue with network deployment is that although you can image a perfectly good machine and deploy across your machines. This does not however work for the plugin as it will look for local settings which are taken away during imaging. Unfortunately, the only way to get the plugin to work is to install it locally on each machine.

This is an issue with the Google software rather than ours and I only came across this about two weeks ago after much scratching of my head to find out what was causing the problem.

The solution does not help if you are deploying across lots of machines, but it is the only way I know that will work.
