Dear all,
I have built a model in Revit of a 3 bedroom house. I then imported it into VE pro, and have customised the wall types in the Building Template Manager.
I now have no idea how I can assign the construction types to my model. I just want to be able to make the various elements (external walls, windows, doors etc) the correct material, a very simple thing that is a basic requirement in order to analyse the model. I have looked everywhere, on every menu, clicked on the walls etc but I can't find any options to enable me to assign the correct properties.
This is a very basic question, but I have never used the software before, and am trying to base my dissertation on it, comparing various construction types. Please help!!
Please help!

One more thing , if you have not attened the IES Traning Program then I would strongly suggest you to go for it.

okay doke,
This is easy dude - although their interface could do with a ****-load of work.
1st things first - take that constructions template thing and shove it in the ****ter. It's worth less than Sarah Palin's degree...
To assign building fabric (or constructions as they call it) we need to:
1) Move into Apache
2) Select the rooms you want to change
3) Click on the Assign Constructions button
4) Select the category/currently assigned construction
5) Select the one you want to replace with (you need to have added a few in the apcdb thing)
6) Click replace
I'll upload an image or two in a moment.
They need better tutorial documents on simple things like this and I think they are planning on it (spoke to one of their support guys last summer about this) but are still struggling to get round to it.
I don't do phone and I've been away for a while but I'll be back for a week or so - if you have a question ask the Zap.
Zap.

Thanks Zap, great help.
Is there a way of selecting all external walls at once? Or do you have to click on the room, and then each wall in turn?
Thanks again.

Re: Please help!
zoom out -select all zones - do same thing.
Re: Please help!
Hi Zap,
I have now successfully change the wall construction, it's not the most user friendly of programs is it!
My project is comparing 4 wall construction types, timber frame, brick/block cavity, straw bale and precast concrete. All other elements such as floors, roof, windows etc remain constant. I want to achieve a basic summary of heating and cooling loads, and something comparing thermal mass (if possible). I would also ideally like something that shows volumes of materials used.
Now I have assigned one of the construction types I am not sure of the best way to get the results I am looking for. Initially when the model is imported a window pops up allowing the location, number of toilets etc to be customised, and I seem to remember there was a basic summary available through that, but now I can't find it. I also need to make sure I have included enough detail to get a useable result, but again, I'm not sure what to check.
Once I have done this for one of the wall construction types I plan on doing it 3 more times, for the others (so another long session of changing external wall construction!). Any tips for speeding this process up would be of great help, is there a way of turning all layers off and only leaving the external walls in view so they can all be selected at once?
Any tips would be appreciated, I am getting very frustrated at the lack of results!
Many thanks,
Martin.

Re: Please help!
Hi again Zap,
I think I have found where to get the results I am looking for.
Can you point me in the right direction for making a custom, straw bale external wall please? I want to use a Uvalue of 0.12w/m2k.
Many thanks.

Hellooo,
IES constructions are quite detailed in some respects and lacking in others.
The continued lack of a good 'basic' fabric wizard amazes me and again shows that the program seems to have been pointed towards academia originally rather than engineers (their actual market).
You can't simply tell the thing to give you a construction with this u-value (well there seems to be a target u value thing but I'm not sure how much use that is and would be interested in others experiences). Rather, what you do is build up your fabric layer by layer to give you the finished construction. You then have to occasionally "tweak" the layer properties to achieve your desired u value. It's mentioned in a less that step-by-step fashion in the constructions database user guide or whatever it's called.
Some links that might help when defining your layers.
