Help menu inside the program

Post by KasperS »

Hello

Some programs have installed so when you are in a specific part, lets say construction manager, then if you press F1 a help describtion for construction manager would appear. I think this would help a lot, specially with parts you don't use often, because the user guides are pretty bad. I think this would also reduce the amount of time your supportteam spends on helping people.

I couldn't agree with you more, we're working to improve the User Guides at the moment and when we are on top of that the plan is to introduce context-sensitive help (we actually had this a few years ago but the decision was made to drop it so more effort could go on maintaining the user guides in pdf format). We've always had the aim of putting in some good context-sensitive help as this is how most quality software is supported.

A more out-there idea that has been raised in the past would be to do this as a wiki, not sure if we'd allow users to contribute to this or not but it would be an interesting approach if people were willing to help their fellow user.

I think it will be hard to use a Wiki for that, because the program changes so often.
I had a course at my university 1,5 years ago, and just the changes from then to now on the grafic part would make it hard if it is only a couple of people maintaining it.

yeah some areas of VE are moving pretty quickly, it's good to try work through different solutions though until we find one that works. For now the best advice I can give it to always read Release Notes and New Features documents when we put out new software so you are at least aware of the changes. I kow that's not ideal but it can help you make sure you are getting the most from IES and VE.
