How to draw a dormer

Post by ZapBran »

Had half an hour to kill and thought I'd start to pay it forward.
This is obviously just for Noobs.

Remember to switch off your intersections before starting this.

I'll improve the resolution once I find out how.

(can't figure out how to embed - youtube code doesn't seem to work here)

Hi,

I don't think you can embed the youtube clip here but it should be something we can get added. I'll look into it.

yeah I do struggle with Subtract. I don't use it all that often so that when I do come to use it I forget what the "rules" are, it never works as I expect.

Basically when you have a smaller shape inside a larger one, you can select the larger shape, click Subtract and then when you select the smaller shape this volume will be cut out of the larger volume.
The difficult/not-so-intuitive part comes in because the smaller shape and larger shape have to have shared surfaces for it to work.

So in the example of a cube, you could have a smaller cube at the corner, it would intersect the larger cube and the two walls and roof are in the same plane so you can cut out a section of the larger cube.

Couple of questions for this:

a) How do I switch off Intersections? (Does that still exist?! Still using 6.4.0.11)
b) Do I have to switch off intersections, and subtract the right size hole before I draw my cube in?
c) If I try to draw a cube over my room, the warning message about intersecting comes on. Is it ok to just click 'ok' because you know you'll fix it eventually?

Thanks.

you can still switch intersections on and off using the key-in (key-in field is top left of the workspace)

"int=off" to switch off
"int=on" to switch back on

If you are switching this off and on then you need to be extra vigilant when you are finished modelling and check your geometry report to ensure you haven't left any geometry problems there before you move on to analysis.

That's still fine to do as part of your modelling process but now you can just draw the intersection in and then click the option on the dialog that pops up to keep the intersection so up to you if you want that dialog to keep popping up.
