Lighting values for Apache EPC calc

Post by Jonnymac »

I haven't used IES for sometime, so I'm a little rusty.

Under the EPC compliance, you can set all the internal lighting parameters i.e setting the lamp type or the w/sqm and lux levels in each zone.

These inputs are greyed out under the Apache EPC area, how are the lighting values set, or are they just given a standard w/sqm based on the activity?

I think you are looking in the NCM Lighting Data area of the Building Regs tab which is mainly for SBEM lighting inputs with some simple NCM controls for DSM. Apache method uses the Lighting gains defined in the Internal Gains section of the template

Phil,

I probably didn't explain very well.

What I'm referring to is the energy used by lighting, not for gains. In apache sim-EPC how are the lamp types of w/m2 entered, do you have to enter them when in SBEM-EPC, or do they not affect the calculation when running Apache sim?

I've made a few changes to the model this way and the results are the same, no matter how the lights change

nah I don't think I'm catching your drift here either

All the lighting for ApacheSim method (Compliance or EPC) is defined on the Internal gains tab, this represents the gain from the lighting and also the Energy used. If you take a look at one of the NCM Lighting gains in your model you will see there is a Max Gain and also Max Power Consumption associated with each (subject to the Variation and dimming profiles as well)

Phil,

Thanks for the response.

So if I am running a large model that requires, ApacheSim method (Compliance or EPC), due to the size and number of zones. I can't change the the lamp types, or w/sqm, are they just fixed. What if I had a tungsten lamp the energy used would be a lot more than a modern T5 or a CFL lamp.

Just trying to get my head around this one.

If you are doing DSM you have more control of your lighting gains. Again you would be editing the Internal Gains >> Fluorescent Lighting.

You have options to edit the Input mode and then through whatever mode you can influence the associated Gain. Lamp type is an option (used to set the Luminaire Efficacy if editing in Inference mode).

All the input modes will be covered in more detail in the NCM Modelling Guide and I believe our DSM training sessions will cover this too.

If you are working in a large model with hundreds of zones, can the building templates be changed to input the internal gain (i.e lighting) in for a specific room type template? The NCM lighting gains are grayed out and cannot be altered and I cannot apply a non NCM template to the zones. I am looking at going around and changing each zone individually which is not practical! Surely has to be a better way?

Sorry a bit Rusty!

Hey JM2000, I am not familiar with using NCM templates but I typically modify the lighting gains using the apache module -> tabular space data -> internal gains. Switch the gain input mode from template to either W/ft^2 or Btu/h. Select all similar spaces and then update the gain and it will modify all accordingly. Otherwise you can export the data to excell to manipulate and re-import. Or they added in a feature to apache now which can copy space attributes that you can paste into others spaces however It appears to copy everything over so probably wouldnt be applicable for your scenario.
