Number of people

Hi all,

Having come up with some very tiny results for DHW demand, I checked the Number of People, and the answer came up as "n/a". I then went through to check if the rooms had a template assigned to them, and they have all reset to the default, and I can't get them to keep the template I assign.

I wonder if:
a) I am assigning it wrong (In Apache, using "Assign Room Thermal Template to Selection Set" button. It's worked before!
b) why there are no people?!
c) if I assign the templates correctly, will that fix the number of people and therefore the DHW demand?

Any ideas gratefully accepted!

Hi,

I haven't heard of thermal template assignment not sticking before so there might be something else going wrong here.

Occupancy is related to the People Gains (internal gains tab) and is only really defined by Occupancy density/number of people input (be careful with the input method here I guess) and then the Variation profile (if not set to On Continuously then remember that whatever fraction value the modulating profile takes at each timestep will be applied tot he number of people so if it's a low number or zero that would significantly reduce the occupancy).

I'd suggest keep it simple while you are troubleshooting, take a copy of the template you are working on, assign it to one room, check room data then run simulation and check results for that room to check it is all consistent then return to the full model and try to work out what went wrong.

Hi, thanks Phil,

Realised why I was getting the n/a message, as I had combined the rooms, when I only selected one room at a time it worked!Turns out I have suitable occupancy after all!

When I query the room data, the thermal template has been set correctly, so I think the 'assign...' window that opens automatically opens on Bathroom, rather than opening on what it is currently set at, hence my confusion.

Slowly learning that IES is all about learning the querks within it!

It just takes a little practice to get used to doing things in VE I think. Once you have been working in it for a few years it's like second nature.

My best advice for anyone starting out is to keep an eye on results as you work through projects, if things don't add up then take sample rooms and track back through to ensure inputs are properly applied. The Tabular Room data for thermal views makes this a lot easier now and you can quickly and easily compare rooms this way to ensure the data is applied consistently etc.
