Internal ceiling surface temperature

Post by bootsam »

We need to assess the difference between a space that has a bare concrete soffit or the soffit lined with an insulating material within an office building. Therefore we need to understand the implications on cooling load and comfort in terms of the room Tres and PPD. Can we do this in IES and if so can you direct me to how. Many thanks for all help given.

Hi,

VE is very capable of allowing you to study this. You just need to draw the building and draw the roof as a separate space, assign thermal properties to that space and then you can run simulations for different Constructions assigned to the soffit (with varying levels of insulation layers defined in the Construction)

Apache Simulation would likely be the best route for this

Thanks. I think I figured it. I also have to use CIBSE Dynamic Values in the options rather than CIBSE Fixed values. Thats what was stopping me getting surface temps.

Oh quick one. Can I place surface temperature sensors or similar with IES. As I'd like to know exactly at which point the temp is measured.

The temperature IES gives you is effectively the average temperature for that surface. That is how it is calculated so there is no more accurate surface temperature data it can give you.

The only way you can look at surface temperature in more detail is to split the one large surface up into several smaller surfaces. You can then look at the average temp for each of these smaller surfaces.

Would you know how to fix the cooling amount in a sim run so i could assess how room temps change as I change the internal surface make up.

Hi,

You could just switch off the cooling (change Cooling profile to off continuously on Room Conditions tab of room data/thermal template). This would apply no cooling.

Or if you want to limit the amount of cooling capacity available within a room, use the "Simulation Cooling Unit Capacity" option on the "System" tab. You can either do it within the Templates or at Room Level using the "Room Query" button.

By default the "Unlimited" tick box is enabled, but once you turn that off you can either set the cooling limit as a kW or a W/m2.

I use these heating and cooling limits on all models as it prevents the systems going bonkers if you've got any accidental crossover of heating / cooling / window opening settings.
