Inner Volume concern when build from Model IT

Post by SakuraOno »

Hello all,
sorry this question is a bit similar to an existing thread but since this question does not concern importing, so I thought I should start the thread anew....very sorry about this if I've violated any posting rules.... :?

Anyway, I just want to confirm with you all what I understood regarding inner volumes? so, if I draw the room dimensions (the actual floor area, not the external perimeters) totally from scratch inside ModelIT, (NOT importing from anything) and I do NOT use "edit selection set inner volume representation", then can I safely assume all calculations will be done for that room that I've just drawn even if I change my wall thickness later, the room volume that I've just drawn remains the same?

For example, if I draw a room 3' x 4' x 6', which is the actual inner dimension of the room. then regardless if my wall/ceiling is 1 foot or 1 inch, can I safely assume that IES knows the room I've drawn has in fact a livable floor area of 12 squarefeet? or livable volume of 72 cubic feet (so essentially the wall/ceiling/floor thickness is set "outwards" (if one may think abstractly) from what I've drawn?) And if I do this, and I have 2-stories, can I still put one directly on top of the other, such that the ground floor starts at elevation = 0 and goes to 6' (that's the floor-ceiling height), and the 2nd floor starts at elevation = 6', and IES will understand that even though the 2 floors are touching (i.e. I didn't leave any floor/ceiling thickness in the middle), but it will take in account of all thickness in the construction even though I didn't physically draw them that way? (because IES understands that I'm just drawing the inner volume and NOT the outer?)

if you know for sure could yo confirm that this is indeed the correct understanding of how IES handles inner volumes? I've read related threads on this but still am not completely clear on how this works. Thank you very much!

Inner Volumes causes a bit of confusion, I don't think you've done anything wrong creating a new thread here.

Anyway two points really

1. if you draw the inner volume and don't switch on inner volumes is this the area/volume used? Yes, the VE will treat the drawn and displayed dimensions as the size of the room. You will see this on reports and anywhere that a per sqm (or sqft) floor area value is calculated.

2. if you don't use inner volumes are the surface thicknesses still taken into account? yes thermally speaking the Constructions in the CDB define all thermal properties including the thicknesses and this is taken into account int he calculations.

Hope this gives you a bit of confidence to carry on with your model

Hello all
I want to compare my model with screen wall and without screen wall in Apache part. (shading of screen wall and no shading) but I can not make screen wall at facet of my model that I made. could you please help me. tnx

Hi,

I think you should have really started a new Topic for this one. If the wall is not part of a bounded room then I would suggest you model as a shading surface so you can study the effects of the solar shading it provides.

Have a look at the room type options in ModelIT User Guide

There is a bit on the Knowledge Base too http://www.iesve.com/support/knowledgebase/faq/2375
