Room in the roof

Post by vic_in_scotland »

Hi all,

Trying to do a domestic building with attic rooms. Can I generate the roof space then split it into the various rooms under the eaves, or should I be creating a top storey which I then cut the edges off to create the sloping roof? :?:

Really not getting my head around it, it's not even Friday-afternoon-itis, because I've been struggling with this since Wednesday!

Any help gratefully received, thanks

Sounds like you could take either approach to this, you should get the same end result anyway and it's a case of having a go at them both and deciding which is easiest.

Just to report back, I created a top storey, then sliced the spaces to get the sloping roofs, then sliced it again to get the upright walls, creating triangular empty unconditioned spaces. I also had to alter the roof angle so that it picked the roof up as roof, not wall.

To say I'm chuffed with the end result would be an understatement :) then again, haven't tried to run a simulation yet, so we shall see just how chuffed I really can be ;)

Thanks for your help, thought I'd reply for anyone else who wants to know!

That sounds positive! Run a quick geometry check before you get too chuffed as well :) In ModelIT Settings menu >> model... then choose zones, surfaces and intersections and click the Check button - make sure you don't have any intersections, unmatched adjacencies, non-planar surfaces...

Premature celebration. I've had to re-draw it from scratch. I can get the rooms in the roof fine, but as soon as I attempt to do anything with them - switch on inner volumes, put dormer windows in, nada. Software doesn't seem to like putting inner volumes on sloping ceilings, so I end up with a mish-mash of inner slopes depending on the room size. Frustrating!

Will post separate thread for help with dormers.
