Speed up room naming

Post by nevduggan »

Hello,

Phew, my 'mouse hand' isn't half feeling weird after an epic room naming session!

It would be great if you could reduce the number of clicks and mouse movements required to name a room.

There could be three ways of doing this (the last one being my favourite):

1. Allow the 'properties' dialogue box to pop up next to the model tree rather than in the middle of the screen. This would reduce mouse curser movement and prevent the highlighted room being hidden (sometimes requiring you to move the dialogue box to see which room has just been selected).
2. Click on a room in the model space and have a 'right click', 'rename' dialogue box. You know which room has been highlighted because you clicked on it in the model (so if the dialogue box hides it, it's not a problem), and because you clicked on the room in the middle of the screen, you don't have to move the mouse between the middle of the screen and the model tree.
3. This would be my favourite - In 'Modelit', select the aspects of the model you're working on, open up the 'tabular room data' and move it to one side so you can see the 'tab data' room names and the model itself...As you select a room in 'tab data', the selected room is highlighted in a colour other than red (say green) on the model. I can then be sure which room I am re naming in 'tab data'. Because tab data doesn't require 'right click, properties, rename' clicks, and because there is no moving between model tree and dialogue box, and because dialogue box's aren't hiding rooms', this would probably quarter the time required to rename a large floor plate (and save my wrist, fingers and eyes). This would be awesome for all sorts of checking in other modules but particularly in modelit for renaming.

Thanks for reading :)

This is a fair point. I have spend hours doing this before.

Perhaps going a step further, could the roomnames get picked up by scanning a DXF automatically?

I think ConstructDXF may already do something like this. But I have never had any luck getting useful geometry out of that. So just keep it simple and look to transfer the text onto existing rooms.

I appreciate all Architect's drawings are different. But they can be easily edited in other software. It would just need a bit of text in vaguely the right position.

I find using the 'find and replace' feature can be very useful in saving time when there is logical room naming and where floor plates are copied upwards.

Name all the rooms correctly on the ground floor and then copy them upwards.

Then use find and replace to, e.g. find '0F' and replace with '1F'
