Create your own construction template

Post by Marc Jensen »

Hey All,

Well since all words including gibberish are too common for the search function.

How do you create your own custom template?

Here is my situation.

Testing 6 different models each with 4 insulation systems.

So rather than entering each and every one in manually I would like to make a template that I can import and then customise where required, and if required such as thicknesses etc...

Thank you again

Marc

There is no way to create or assign a Construction Template.

You always have the default Construction Template (you can edit the Constructions it assigns for each category) and the way this works is it applies the defined Constructions to any new geometry you create in ModelIT as you create it but you don't assign the template to existing geometry in the same way you do a thermal template.

You just have to use the Assign Constructions dialog to do that.

This is covered elsewhere in the forum I'm sure but as you already said you found it hard to find a unique term to search which is understandable. I might add it to the Support Centre Knowledge Base as well since it is occasionally a question that is asked.

Alternatively if the assignments are the same for each of your test cases you might just want to edit the properties of the Constructions and leave them assigned? Depends which method would be faster/least effort I suppose.

Hi Phil,

Ok that answers that question.

Seems for my individual models I will have to enter the details manually.
This should be included in the next update: The ability to create your own personalised Templates for constructions, HVAC and Main System Types.....

I think that would speed up the modelling process significantly.

Construction templates noted...

what do you mean by HVAC System templates? ApacheHVAC has an export/import function already but there is not anything like this for Apache systems? How would that relate to a template though?

Hi,

Sorry, what I meant by HVAC Template is not related to the HVAC Module as such but when creating a model it would enable me to import my preferred settings and systems. Such as for us in New Zealand we do not tend to use anything apart from a heat pump system powered by electricity. usually they are mitsi electric versions and if we had a template where we could enter the model number of a 120W/m2 baseline unit and the program uses that models template to change the CoP's and efficiencies so that they are consistent across projects.

Then once we have found the peak energy draw we can change the size of the unit in the templates and rerun the simulations with the exact unit we would reccomend.

I think that that could be useful.

Any template system that we can transfer commonly used systems and constructions between simulations would be excellent. We have NZ construction templates with walls roofs etc but I would like that to extend to AC units and then for us to have favorites that can be easily selected before modelling and during modelling.

Thank you

Yeah I see where you are coming from and I think it does tie in with some of the functionality currently being developed/planned. I'll pass details of this thread on to the the feedback team.

Not sure why it hasn't been done already but I guess things just move quickly and it's now that people are really beginning to look at efficiency and productivity due to size and complexity of projects scaling up rapidly so we're seeing these kinds of enhancements in VE which are as valuable (or more?) than some of the new features that get added

Hi Phil,

I agree, I am starting to enjoy using IES, Still pull my hair out now and then but thats probably my fault!

To be honest if there was an option to create a personal template with our usual settings that are easy to modify at the beginning and on the fly I think that that would really speed up the modelling process. And the option to import a custom template at any stage during the modelling process would be excellent. Something that has a window with:

Do you want to change: Default Construction With My Custom Template
Using drop downs or ticks etc

And have that for the constructions, heat pump settings, weather data, units and other customisable bits and pieces All on the same page :)

That would be great for us as we tend to get a project from a client where we are required to test a building with multiple constructions and make ups to inform them of the best method.

:)
