Merging multiple spaces at once

Post by Marc Jensen »

Hi Team,

Been awhile since I have been on this, seems IES is getting some decent improvements!

I am running into an un-optimised part of the program.

I can create perimeter zones and have kinda what I want. (This tool trips up at any sign of odd geometry past a square or rectangle. Why!?)

Anyway lets assume I create a bunch of internal zones, now my fitout plans have all changed and I have to start from scratch with the fitout, however I have complex glazing, shading and profiles associated with all of the zones.

How can I merge all of the zones into one space in one go.

Yes I can do that manually, but I have multiple floors and 40+ zones per floor that are all different. And no I am not deleting and starting again.

Please tell me that I have missed a fancy new tool somewhere!

If I select my master zone and select multiple spaces and try merge, the button greys out and all I can do is connect the spaces. This is not what I want.

I want to merge them all at once....

I know the merge tool was the bain of my existence a couple of years ago as it broke everything in the spaces that you merged, but I hope it has been improved...

Thanks anyway.

Additionally, when you merge spaces around a lift core, I am yet to have the merge tool not cause errors due to intersections and unbound surfaces. There was a post in this forum back in 2010 stating this exact issue with no fix...

Also where is the hot key support!?

When I click on the space, I want to be able to write a script that lets me merge the spaces quicker, however there is no apparent support for hot keys in this instance.

Additionally why does the Retain Partitions/Remove partitions never remember your past settings!?? This is really frustrating having to manually change it each time back to remove partitions.

You could merge all of the interior spaces in one go using the 'shell' command.

Then merge this zone with the perimeter zones.

But be careful because 'shell' removes all doors and windows.

Also NB you cannot merge the rooms all around a lift shaft if this results in a room within a room.

Thanks Wasted,

That is an interesting command, how can you prevent it from merging everything in your model?

I have tried selecting zones then typing shell but it still merges everything.

Yes I have found this to be problem in the past.

To be honest I've not used it in the scenario you have given. Rather I use it to turn completed buildings into adjacent shells in multi-building developments - its a really quick way of doing this.
