Editing zones that are off grid

Post by jm2000 »

I have inherited a model where part of the building is at an angle to the rest of the building meaning that many points are not on the grid. I want to adjust a zone following an architectural change, I have tried to pull the face of wall out to make the change I want, but it intersects with other spaces and causes an error. Next best option would be to redraw the zone it but as it meets other spaces on nearly every side I can see that it won't form a nice new zone with the correct adjacency, as its not on the grid. Any tips to sort these annoying modifications as this comes up a lot !

This is such a big problem - off -grid coordinates are going to result from any modifications to buildings involving walls that are not perpendicular (so that's pretty much any real building). I get this problem all the time, and the advice from IES? "We recommend using the grid" - yeah, right, perfect if you have only perpendicular walls and a building that is nicely aligned to the horizontal and vertical axes.

I have wasted hours, days trying to chase away intersection errors and adjacency errors which happen for this reason. In the end, I delete most of what I have drawn and start again. It is such an enormous waste of time and reduces workflow to a snail's pace. "Model Report" seems not to declare some unmatched adjacency problems (ie all is fine), until you carry out a minor adjustment elsewhere in the model, then it flags them up. You'll be there all day. The answer - well, for me at least, is to give up with the VE and find a different piece of software, eg Designbuilder.
