rooflight angled/tilt openings

Post by macpavee »

Hi

so, i am trying to model a yurt!

with the central crown i would like the option of opening it. i would like however to control which side lifts. i.e to allow the wind to draw and not gust in.
window opening types allow for top/bottom hung types, but which way would this then open on a horizontal plane? can i control this somehow?

would you suggest a different way around this? Louvre perhaps? Or would the custom/sharp orifice work better. (although admittedly i still dont completely understand what this option is actually doing).

thanks

Hi,

Have a look through both the MacroFlo User Guide and the related Calculation methods documents to get a better feel for how to use these inputs.

The pre-defined options in the opening Types interface are there simply as a resource to help you calculate the equivalent orifice area for you opening type. If you check the calculations then you will see that regardless of input method MacroFlo will pass to Apache a single orifice area for use in the sim. Apache assumes this is a sharp edged orifice in all instances so we have to calculate an equivalent orifice area that actually accounts for the performance of our opening.

Thus you can use the pre-defined sets which are based on some measured wind tunnel tests for different types of opening or else just use the custom sharp edged orifice type and enter your own equivalent area directly.

Hi Mac

You can set which side opens based on the wind direction at any given time.

The variable for wind direction is "wd" within the profiles database and you can use that to control your opening. So, for example, if you have an opening on the east side of your yurt you may only want it opening if the wind direction is NE to SE and when the internal temperature is above 22C, say. In this case you would apply the following daily control profile to that particular side:

gt(ta,22.5,1)&wd>45&wd<135

The convention is that wind direction is measured in degrees clockwise from North.

Of course, you could then set up a similar profile on the west side as well. Just keep in mind that trying to draw air from a space may not work well unless you have got a low level inlet somewhere to equalise the pressure within the model.
