Activating external walls

Post by sce9mm2 »

Hi,
Just a quick question... the external perimeter of the building that appears as grey lines in the image on the left hand side, doesn't appear in the model viewer on the right. Is there any way to activate it? Please kindly refer to the image attached.

Thank you..

Hi,
If I am guessing right , you are not able to see the attached walls in ModelViewer. I can not read your comments on the attached file.

I will give you a guideline while drawing a geometry using dxf file.

External walls – Grown inwards i.e. draw the outer wall surface.
External roofs – Grown inwards i.e. draw the outer wall surface.
Internal. Walls – Grown from the wall centreline i.e. draw on the centreline.
Internal ceilings – Grown downwards i.e. draw the top surface of the floor above.

I hope this has been of some help.

If you have any further queries then please don’t hesitate to contact.

Hi,

You 're guessing right but I need some clarifications about your guideline.
1. First of all, when should I draw the walls and the roofs? Before or after construct DXF?
2. Secondly, for some reasons I cannot draw the constructions lines exactly where I want. I mean that IES points-edges are always diverged from those that I click on. Why is that?
3. Since all draw options are 3D how I will work with heights and dimensions?
4. Do you agree that I have to use the dxf plan as a guideline so as to draw the external walls?
5. Finally, let's say that I manage to draw the walls, will doors will be included in the building or the external wall will be illustrated as a close loop without openings (doors, windows)?
I know that I have to learn many things about IES but I am still in the beginning and this forum is my only chance to learn how to work it properly.

Thanks in advance,

Maria

Dear Maria,
My replies to your queries.
1. First of all, when should I draw the walls and the roofs? Before or after construct DXF?
This question is bit unclear to me. The walls & roofs get created when you use a action of 'Construct-DXF' .
You have to keep in mind that while constructing DXF
[*]What is the base height?
[*]What is the storey height?
So that it will not intersect with other rooms.
I have mentioned a links to the user guide of Construct-DXF & Construct-DXF Drawing requirements.
http://www.iesve.com/downloads/help/VE6 ... uctDXF.pdf
http://www.iesve.com/downloads/help/VE6 ... ements.pdf

Secondly, for some reasons I cannot draw the constructions lines exactly where I want. I mean that IES points-edges are always diverged from those that I click on. Why is that?

You need to choose certain 'Lock' settings according to your need.
Click on the 'Lock settings' button from the toolbar OR select 'Settings >> Locks' action.

3. Since all draw options are 3D how I will work with heights and dimensions?
Drawing is not allowed in 'Axonometric View' , rest in all other view it is possible.

4. Do you agree that I have to use the dxf plan as a guideline so as to draw the external walls?
Yes , if you are using dxf file as a reference while drawing.

5. Finally, let's say that I manage to draw the walls, will doors will be included in the building or the external wall will be illustrated as a close loop without openings (doors, windows)?

Yes , windows & doors whill appear if you create a dxf file in AutoCAD with layers for windows & proper Door marking.

Maria , I hope this has been of some help. As you are new user to IES<VE> , I would strongly recommend you to go for "IES Training Program" . This training is provided by the experts. I had mentioned a link for IES Training Calendar in my previous post.
Thanks & Regards ,

Dear Vajindarladdad,

1. I didn't pose my question in a clear way.
My DXF file includes external walls but are not shown in the moder viewer.
I have read both user guides again and again and I ve realised that even if DXF files are not imported, IES creates a building with walls without thickness. In DXF case even if external walls are not appeared, IES takes them into account.
5. I drew the external walls on the lines that already exist in DXF file before construct DXF and in that case doors and windows are not shown.

Probably there is no way to show the external walls and since are recognised there is no reason to try to modify it.

Thank you for your help.

Wall thickness can be shown using 'Create Inner volume'.

Dear Vajindarladdad,

Inner volume is on. But again the external walls are not shown. I deactivated and activated again but nothing changed.
I still believe that is not possible to show the external perimeter of a building when DXF is used.
Even in the example used in DXF construct user guide, external walls remain grey lines.

In page 28 of ConstructDXFTutorial is mentioned:
'There will be small gaps between zones due to the wall thicknesses. As long as the gap between zones is less than the Maximum Horizontal Separation set in the Tolerances tab in the Settings dialogue box, ModelIT will recognise that
these zones are thermally adjacent to one another. In this way, wall thicknesses can be accommodated.'

Only for illustration purposes, I may put a name for walls just to avoid the aforementioned gaps.

I have already applied for web seminars but since I work on IES for thesis purposes and the submission is in two months, I unfortunately have no time to learn how to work with IES in a proper way.
However, I really appreciate your help and your advices.

Regards,

Maria
