Radiance trouble when first time start up

Hi,

I re-installed VE, and when I started up Radiance for the first time, a popup window told me that a registry key is invalid or missing (something like HKEY/.../Lawrence berkeley national laboratory/radiance). I clicked ok or continue, then, just after that or when I wanted to simulate, another window brings up an invalid or missing raypath value in the registry.
But now, everything looks ok. I didn't have those messages anymore. Can anyone tell me if it's a problem?
Cedric

Dear Cedric,
Could you please run IESFix.exe file with full administration right. This file is found on C:\Program Files\IES\VE 6XX\apps folder & then try to run ve.exe file with complete administration rights.

If the problem still persists then please contact our support & keys department with complete 'System Report'.

Hi Cedric,

You don't need to be alarmed by this, it's a known issue. It Should only happen the first time you run RadianceIES then you will never see the error again. It's VE/Radiance trying to check a registry entry before it's been written I think but after you have been in once everything is registered correctly and should function as normal.

If you do see any further errors when using Radiance that you can't explain then let us know but it sounds like your installation is working fine.

Well, I do have some problems. From time to time when simulating a working plane, I get a window that says "Problem generating the working plane point file". The calculation will freeze until I click OK, and then continue. I can get that message a few times during a simulation, but the results do appear and look ok. One time though, the calculation froze and never took back, I have to abort. And after that, no simulations would start... The popup window title is CPropertyPageCI::GenerateWPImage()
Also, two message I get in french (my windows is french), so I suppose it comes from Windows. The first one, during simulation, says something like "the specified file was not found". The second one, I think it appears at any moment (opening image file, one time during a simulation just after I clicked OK to that "Problem generating the working..." message), says something like "the process cannot acces the file because it is used by another process". While typing this reply, a simulation is processing on another computer and I just got the first mesage (problem generating...), after clicking ok I got the last french message I told you about (process cannot access the file), but then after clicking ok, another message, again in french, "a non valid argument was detected". And now the calculation is freezed. That last message, I also got after the message saying "the specified file was not found".
All of that is really annoying.
I am not sure if my translations from french to english are correct, so here's the messages in french, if someone happen to speak french:
"Le fichier spécifié est introuvable"
"Le processus ne peut pas accéder au fichier car ce fichier est utilisé par un autre processus"
"Un argument non valide a été détecté"
Thank again for your help.
Cedric

Hi Cedric,

This does sound irritating but I'm glad you are able to at least complete the calculations. Those error messages sound quite standard so I think your translations are good!

"the process cannot access the file because it is used by another process" sounds like a permissions issue, first thing is to make sure you have the model saved on your local machine C: Drive, if you have the model stored on a network then there may be permissions issues like this when Radiance is trying to run calcs and save results. Also make sure the model project folder isn't set to read only or locked to another account.

If you have a model that can reproduce this error every time then please send it over to Tech Support and we'll be able to investigate (with the help of a developer to troubleshoot if necessary) and hopefully find the cause of the problem.

For the "specified file was not found" problem, could it be that there accent character (french symbols) in the file path that are not recognized. But if that was the case, then I guess it would never work (I can get some simulations when they aren't too long to render).

I thought everything was running smoothly... I made sure that there wasn't french accent symbols in the folder path. I've also redone the models, on the computer with which I run the simulations (I'm using two computers). On one of the computer, everything's ok (well almost, I'll come back to that). On the second one, I still get "specified file was not found"... I will try to know what file is missing. When I compare radiance folders (on the two computers), there’s wpflit.bat and raytrace.out that is missing. I don’t know if those files are important. When I compare Radiance.log, I see that one says “no light sources found”.
Ok, also, I'm trying to set up a queue of images to render. It will start but it freezes at "0.00% generated" on the first simulation. So I need help once again on this problem...

I wonder if these issues are due to large models or complex geometry rather than any problem with the installation of VE on your machine.

Can you try all these things for some simple rooms with a few windows to see if you still get the same issues?

It does sound like you may have limited memory on the machine so it's just taking a long time/RAM to run the calculations

It's a very simple model. One room, one window, one lightshlef. I have a 4GB ram computer. It takes a near 30 minutes to simulate a 1000 pixel working plane on maximum quality. But when I send a series of simulations in the image queue, it never gets going.
By the way, that "specified file was not found" problem seems to be resolved. I saved the model with a shorter file path.

yeah there seems no reason this shouldn't be able to run for you, I've pasted below some other reasons we've seen Radiance (and batch) fail on users machines int he past.
Other reasons that you might experience problems:
1. A room with no openings (need light from somewhere).
2. Invalid view setting (looking into wall, eye outside room etc).
3. Anti-virus flagging the radiance executables and batch files as threats and stopping them.
If you want to archive the model and send to support@iesve.com (mark it FAO Phil and I'll pick it up) then I can see if the same thing happens here (please inlcude exact steps of what you do when the problem occurs).
