How far are you with the new radiance version?

Post by KasperS »

Hello

As you probably remember, i have been very dissatisfied with my results from some of my radiance simulations. However i have found out ways to get the simulations correct, but i hope some of those mistakes/flaws will be eliminated with the new version of radiance.

Phil, you said that the new version would be here during spring, so i was just curios how far you have gotten?

As i see it, the different "low quality-high quality" shouldnt be there, because the results aren't close to what the reality is. As i understand high quality should be close to what the real DF is, but there is a huge difference between high quality and maximum. If you still have those different quality steps, i think you should make people better aware of the difference between them, because i compared high quality with other programs, and they werent close to eachother, however the maximum was.

Another thing is the color pallet (or what you call it), which doesn't work. If you dont make it work, please just remove it, because it didnt matter what color you chose on that one, it still gave the same results.

Hi Kasper,

These are interesting results (and your other comments have been noted), on the new version of Radiance in VE - I'm afraid other priorities have taken over, the team are making good progress on this but it's not going to be ready for release in this upcoming version as we're still working through it and it will require some fair testing before we release to public.

Ive raised your other comments with the Radiance developers to get their opinions on this.

Bit of follow up on this one...
As i see it, the different "low quality-high quality" shouldn't be there, because the results aren't close to what the reality is. As i understand high quality should be close to what the real DF is, but there is a huge difference between high quality and maximum. The idea here is to allow prototyping and design options to be assessed with some quick feedback. I believe in our training sessions we make it clear that the higher quality settings are to be used for the accurate detailed analysis. Personally I can see the benefit of allowing this as I'm sure if we removed the lower quality settings we'd have a few unhappy users out there.
Another thing is the color pallet (or what you call it), which doesn't work. If you don't make it work, please just remove it, because it didn't matter what color you chose on that one, it still gave the same results.
One of our Radiance users picked up on this, he showed me results of some tests that had been performed comparing Illuminance results on the same room for different runs where the internal wall colour was changed using the colour palette (via Edit/select material dialog >> Colour) and from the different scenarios we saw a significant change in the Lux values so I'm pretty happy this is in fact working.
