PLEASE ADVISE (URGENT)

Post by madi2044 »

Hello

I have an IESVE file which I could not open with my previous IES 6.4 version. Therefore, I have downloaded the latest IES 2012 version. However, when I attempt to open the file I get the message that certain upgrades should be carried out and when I confirm that , it seems the software freezes and the file does not come up. I have a deadline for tomorrow and your advice is appreciated.

Hi,

Was the problem opening the file the same in VE 6.4? Is there an actual error displayed? Maybe you can leave it a bit longer and it will eventually open?

I've noticed that the backup can take a little time (not a bad thing really considering it's making a backup in the older version for you).

However it could also be a "Donald Ducked" file... recovery options?
i) Copy the MIT file alone to a new directory and see if that opens - if so it'll be a supporting file (MTD or something else) that's causing the hang.
ii) Check out the MIT in a windows explorer - if it's 2kb or something small like that then I think it's pretty safe to assume that it no longer contains any data. Recover from backup or failing that go down to a local bar and set up a tab - you'll be there a while.

Here's a few things I do:
1) Export a GEM - this is a geometry only file that you can always use to start again.
2) Make a daily CAB archive so you never lose more than a couple of hours work should things go wrong.
3) Don't just work on 1 file - you aren't that hard up for disk space - make a couple of "Save As" options for yourself so you can always revert or compare different options. You can always move/copy the simulation results files into the save Vista folder and compare options that way (model must be the same-ish when it comes to room numbers/names etc).
4) Any time you get an update from IES for God's sake don't just open your existing models... they have a habit of updating various things in the background and have a habit of dropping you in the smelly stuff. Again do a save as (into a new folder with the version name in the title perhaps).

I'd NEVER rely on a software company/product to behave properly so take their influence out of the equation wherever possible.

Zap.
