problem subtract partially intersecting volumes asymmetric

Hi all. Having a problem subtracting two partially intersecting volumes that have asymmetric roofs.
Ie. in full i have two rectangular (in plan) spaces which have rooms open to the roof slopes so i need to model the full volume. Each have monopitch roofs sloping opposite to each other. The spaces overlap in part on corners.
What i am struggling with is how to subtract the volume where the two intersect/overlap. It seems you can only subtract volumes (using the 'connect spaces' tool) when the volume to be subtracted is exactly contained with the volume being subtracted from.
Yet that is really difficult /impossible to create (it seems to me) when you have such as these asymmetric roof slopes.
If i model them separetely then try to overlay them by moving vertices i get an error message "space 'xxx' intersects existing space"
Any ideas?
