Editing vertices - won't action

I have a couple of rooms which are insertecting other rooms. I have tried to edit the vertices for the overlapping areas but the system won't complete the action as it states that the two rooms are overlapping. (I know!)
I have double checked the vertices in each room so I know that I'm doing it right - it's worked before. so what's going on?

All sorted - I needed to edit more vertices in the room!

thought I might shove my 2 cents in here.
i don't tent to move vertices at all - i use the cutting plane.
Just line up with the adjacent wall and cut away the intersecting space.
measure twice... cut once...
