different density battons in a lightweight wall

i would like to be experimenting with the use of different densities of material embedded at different layers through the walls insulation depth.


I just realised that i am unsure as to how IES-VE allows for the potential mass effect of say, the wooden battons in a lightweight structure.
in the constructions assignment, when creating your own wall, there is only the option for boards which span the space or perhaps timber, however it doesnt seem to offer a function for a batton size and would appear to assume any timber spans the entire surface of the wall.
the thermal bridging of the timber must have been included in the calculations of the standard wall type constructions on offer. how is this done?
and how do i apply the method to different material types embedded in the wall?

Thermal bridging is normally an architectural responsibility to calculate and check . I believe there are specialist programs built for that purpose but IES defaults to assuming 10% of the u value.

As for applying batton width ceiling/wall constructions the only thing I can think of is to split the room into multiple zones in plan/section view and apply different constructions to the individual surfaces that are then created as a by-product.

Again, it sounds as though you are attempting to study something that may be too subtle for IES to truly pick up.

If I can reach for an analogy; IES is built for looking at the big picture, it's a pair of glasses to bring all the individual components into focus enough to see them interacting but it wont allow you to see the fine details of any one component very well. What you need is one of the "microscope" programs that go into great detail on one particular aspect but you'll need a different one for each of the different specialist questions you are asking.

i'll have a read through for ALL the assumptions

Try those and get an overall R Value then simulate with that.

Like Complex rightly pointed out IES doesn't care too much about the bridging through each component. It would be hell trying to set that up clearly if that was the case etc. And the overall wall R value has a larger "Big Picture" impact on the energy than some bridging issues.
