IES recently held a faculty event in London where our compliance expert Michael Pollock presented our new Part L FAQ and went over model set up and data input to get the best possible Part L and EPC results. This presentation was recorded and can now be viewed on our YouTube channel, links are copied below.

Does any of this apply to SBEM?

Yes. Most of the content can be applied to both DSM & SBEM methods but there are some major differences in how you should set up your projects, depending on what you are using.

The following is a short list on the limitations of SBEM when compared to DSM:

SBEM does not have the ability to accurately model void or unheated spaces (see iSBEM user guide for further guidance)
SBEM does not support solar shading calculations (no need to model local shading devices)
HVAC system specification is limited
Lighting inputs are different

Also, because SBEM creates the Notional building itself it is very difficult to compare it to the Actual building.
