PRM - Daylight Simulation

Post by markos »

Hi VE users,

can anyone tell me please how to perform a Daylight Simulation within PRM Navigator since this feature is new for me? I simply installed new VE 2015, started a new project and until I came to PRM Simulation everything was OK. But first is needed to perform Daylight Sim and here is starting my issue.

First of all I recieved an error message "Problem reading data from the sensor results file" afterwards "System can't find this file". So I went through the tabs and found "Sensor Settings", I have set sensors within rooms, started Radiance simulation but the error message showed again "Problem reading data....". In "Dynamic Simulation" tab after running the sim an error message showed up "There is no data generated for the 10K CIE Overcast Sky simulation". Question is how can I generate such a data and so on?

So I assume that I'm certainly doing something incorrectly or in wrong order because I have never used RadianceIES.

So can anybody explain me please what is necessary to do before Daylight Sim and guide me through it? I'm in time stress now because customer is waiting for results... :(

I will appreciate any help and advices.

Hi markos,

I am wondering why you need daylight simulation for the PRM navigator? Typically all you need is the solar shading calculations which is one of the early steps in the navigator.

Unless you specifically need to incorporate radiance calculations in your PRM simulation, the issue you described sounds like a bug that IES support can help you with. Otherwise, when running the PRM simulation, simply uncheck the Radiance calculations, and your simulation should progress.

Hi farahghanem,

thank you for your comment. I don't understand it either. There is no reason to run radiance simulation within PRM.

I appreciate your advice to simply uncheck radiance calc but I have not even opportunity to do that. As soon as I press PRM Simulation button there is a message with warning that Radiance sim wasn't performed yet.

So you did not encountered such a problem right? In that case it seems like a bug in my installation or something like that.

Thanks.

Correct I have not run into such an error. It might help if you post a screenshot of it.

Sorry but I don't know how to post attachments. I can't see any upload button to attache image from my PC.

Nevermind. I did not mentioned previously that I'm using PRM Navigator 2010 and there is an option to perform Radiance sim (I wonder why?). And also I did not mentioned that it need to be performed only for baseline building simulation (it's weird).

If I find out how to post images I will do it and maybe it will be helpful a little bit.

I have found out the problem is in inner volumes - exactly as stated in "Known issues in VE 2015". After removing inner volumes Radiance sim ran without errors.

But WHY do I have to perform this daylight simulation before baseline PRM sim? It's enormous waste of time.

It is great that you have figured out the source of the issue!

You can use the BB-codes (mentioned on the righ side of the screen when you are typing a reply, under the emoticons) to post images/links.

Hi markos,

You actually need to run Radiance simulation for your Baseline building if you are using the 90.1-2010 PRM navigator since as per ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Appendix G baseline building lighting system shall have photocell controllers for daylight dimming for certain space types (you can check for these provisions in the ASHRAE standard, and do not foget to see the addenda for some changes). When you generate baseline building through the navigator IES automatically asigns dimming profiles (together with autoshutoff profiles) in your baseline to comply with the requiremnts of ASHRAE for baseline.

And in order to comply with the ASHRAE mandatory provisions, your proposed design would actually need to have some kind of dimming as well.

Hope this helps,
Kiril
