Modelling Kinetic Facade - Advice

Post by TrooperCooper »

Hi guys,

Long time lurking and not much posting, like to think I'm fairly confident with the VE now and for my uni project I'm studying the effects of a kinetic facade. The only issue I'm having is how to do that, the facade in question is going to be of the "Wind Veil" type. Basically hanging a metre off the external wall (only on one side of the building) will be a frame with tiny squares covering it and the top, bottom and sides will be sealed glass. The front face during summer will have the tiles loose and allow air to pass into the facade and allow the space to act like a double skin facade but during colder periods the tiles will be pulled onto the grid frame and close up any holes by means of compressed air.

My question is do you think IES is capable of handling this sort of simulation accurately? Ive built the project (a 12 story high hotel) and modelled the kinetic facade in Sketchup with great success pulling it into IES. My idea was to dynamically simulate the building with the facade all closed up and then again with the tiles hanging around 4 inches off the holes to allow air flow into the DSF and finally simulate it one last time with the tiles all angled 30 degrees to simulate wind force.

I can provide pictures if that helps, any advice at all would be great.

Thanks

Troop
