Free Cooling

Post by JohnLloyd »

Has anyone else noticed that in the latest few versions of the software the way 'Free Cooling' is applied to the Actual and Notional buildings are different?

The Actual still uses the cooling set point temperature to control the amount of free cooling.

The Notional uses the heating set-point + 1°C. (As required by clause 47 of the 2013 edition of the NCM Modelling Guide)

This invariably results in summer time room temperatures being higher in the Actual building than the Notional. The problem with this is it has an impact upon the Heating / Cooling loads of the two buildings which is reported on the BRUKL document and has a fairly large impact upon the BREEAM ENE 01 calculations.

In my opinion, there should be consistency between the Actual and Notional building methodologies and think that free cooling in the Actual building should use the same set-point as the Notional. We've discussed this at national level in my company and we are all in agreement.
