What is the purpose of having an unoccupied room representing a stratified zone for displacement ventilation? How does this effect the final simulation/calculations?

IES reports back a single average temperature for every thermal zone in your model. This means that, if you model your high displacement vent space as a single zone, the model will only report the average temperature, even though there could actually be 8K difference between the low level and high level zones.

For thermal comfort studies this means you would not be getting a true read of temperatures at occupied levels and for energy, it means your return air temperatures are likely going to be too low.

By splitting the model into vertical zones it gives a much closer approximation of the temperatures throughout the space.
