Renewable Elec Supply and Part L

Hi all

I was asked a question the other day that I wasn't sure about and can't find much info on, so thought I'd open it up to the VE forum to see if an EAs have an answer.

If our client, an owner operator, has a 100% renewable 'green' electricity supply, do the electrical services used in the SBEM/DSM still use the carbon factor 0.519 kgCO2/kWh ?

I think so because they could change supplier or supply, but can't find much evidence support my thoughts.

Any ideas?

Hi, your gut feeling is right. When using grid-supplied electricity, we should stick to the 0.519 as specified in the NCM Modelling guide. I think this value is the average carbon factor for the grid back in 2013 as calculated by the now defunct DEFRA.

Thanks for your reply, yeah I think you're right, best to stick with the NCM carbon factor (though as you implied, this is somewhat outdated)

I think I'll try convince our client focus on implementing electric powered building services, designing out nat' gas, in order to provide a development which is effectively zero carbon. Even if Part L compliance would'n recognise that fact.

I believe that government are proposing a much lower carbon emission rate for grid generated electricity in the next iteration of the NCM to reflect the fact that an increasing proportion is generated using renewables.
