I'm trying to model the depth of windows for shading considerations. I have tried building 'local shade' rooms around each window frame, but when I try this approach model the interior frame shading, ModelIt won't allow the intersection of spaces. I have found a 'local shading device' option in the Apache Constructions Database, and it seems this would be an easier strategy than the first, but does it give the same effect, i.e. shade solar heat gains?

The local shading option will be fine for thermal simulation (that's it's job) but you won't get any visuals.
Inner volumes give the reveal but the window is always on the outer surface.
Using the local shade is a reasonable approach but it sounds like your drawing work could do with a little attention. If you build snapping to grid you shouldn't get intersections.
