Hello,

I'm given a model of three floors where the individual spaces on each floor seem to be already connected as I don't have access to 'connect spaces' option when I drill down to each surface. But, on the other hand, if I am able to click each individual surface, doesn't this mean the rooms aren't connected on each floor?

How do you connect surfaces in version 5.9.2 and seperate them later??

Hi Caroline,

I think you are right and the problems you had in radiance were possibly linked to this geometry.

It sounds like the rooms are connected on each floor. To separate them you select the main space in ModelIT, go down a level of decomposition (the down arrow), change the Surface dropdown (above the workspace) to Edit. In the Edit Space dialog click on the Separate Composite Space tab and you will see each room listed that makes up the combined space. Select the rooms and click the Separate button. Then go back up to model level and you should find you can select individual rooms from the rooms browser.

To connect rooms again select a room then click the Connect Spaces button on the toolbar and select any other rooms adjacent to the selected room and then click Connect.

I have VE version 5.9.2 and don't see this menu arrow 'surface' tab you're referring to (?).

Also, in order to make a Daylight Factor analysis, the individual spaces on a floor have to be connected (with holes) for there to have an overall floor analysis, is this correct?

Yeah that's right to see the whole floor together in one image you would need to have all the rooms connected (they don't need to be connected by holes unless that represents the design you are trying to analyse).

When you connect rooms you get the option to retain partitions, if you choose not to retain partitions then a 100% hole will separate the rooms.

In 5.9.2 the process to separate rooms is exactly the same:
- select the space in ModelIT
- click the blue down arrow (at the bottom of the workspace in 5.9.2)
- click the dropdown to the left of the down arrow (it says Surface at first)
- Select Edit from the dropdown, the Edit Space dialog opens
- click the Separate Composite Space tab
- select sub-rooms and click the Separate button
